Mixnotes is a passion project that explores two different areas of tension: the push and pull of digital versus analog experiences, particularly in their relation to music, and the shifting role of the designer as design progresses towards automation and away from individual creation. A designer’s role starts to shift from that of creating something visually singular and new, to transforming content that already exists by placing it in a new context, or allowing the viewer to see that content in a new and different way.

There is a human need and pleasure in holding real, physical objects. Mixnotes is a service that allows people to order a physical zine for a specific playlist, a modern personalized form of the of “liner notes” that traditionally accompanied vinyl albums.

Playlists are primarily digital today, and very easy to create.
The Mixnotes service automatically pulls Google images that correspond with the name of each song in the playlist. Simply put, the input is the name of the song, and the output is random images that come up from Google. Putting this content in a zine form, along with song lyrics, Mixnotes combines the idea of automation with the enduring joy experienced from analog things.
